OK, I was wrong. I've completely changed my mind. The hurricane thing should have been completely a federal issue and not in any way local or state. I came to this point of view after witnessing New Orleans Police officers looting WalMart (Don't believe me? Watch this!). Clearly they are unequiped to handle this like any other state would have. Hell, had such a disaster happened in CA, the lib's would be calling for Arnie's resignation/recall right? Don't lie. You know it's true. It's only a state or local thing if there's a Republican in charge.

An explanation of natural law and natural rights. Most of the old literature on natural law and natural rights, notably the writings of John Locke, has become incomprehensible because we no longer have the background knowledge of natural law that those writers assumed. This article makes the concept of natural law intelligible to modern people.
Natural law and natural rights follow from the nature of man and the world. We have the right to defend ourselves and our property, because of the kind of animals that we are. True law derives from this right, not from the arbitrary power of the omnipotent state.
Was the Founding of America rooted in the Christian heritage and natural law? Or, is it a product of the Enlightenment, infused with the idea of the perfectibility of man, and therefore inimical to the Christian conception of reality and to world view that natural law implies? Was the Founding fatally flawed in its origins? If so, are present day evils simply a logical working-out of this fatal flaw? Or do current maladies result from a fundamentally sound proposition gone awry? The answers to these questions determine whether America is founded on basic principles that are true or just — ones which we can unqualifiedly support — or whether republic is based on ideas that are false and unavoidably lead corporate and individual evil. If the United States is, as I believe it is, founded on the highest moral principles of any government that ever existed, then we owe her and the principles on which she was founded our grateful support. If, on the other hand, America is founded on principles that are malign, then we are actually complicitous in anything we do to advance America's two hundred-year-old experiment in democracy.
So, where does the truth lie? There is no denying that the Enlightenment influenced the Founders, but does a partial influence make American political origins solely a product of the Enlightenment? To answer this and other questions we have asked, we must grapple with yet another: How much of the Constitution is derived from concepts of the Enlightenment and how much implies the Christian world view and a respect for natural law? A close reading of the Constitution lends any fair-minded reader to the inescapable conclusion: divorced from natural law and Christian principles, the Constitution would be utterly incomprehensible — a philosophical mish-mash devoid of cogent argument, compelling moral vision, or unifying principles.
However, the proof for this thesis is somewhat indirect because there are no Christian principles per se embedded in the Constitution: rather, the Constitution is embedded in Christianity. The Constitution does not declare principles, it provides for their implementation. It considers the principles on which America is founded so self-evident it does not even name much less defend them. In its short Preamble the Constitution briefly mentions, without defining, justice, general welfare and the blessings of liberty, clearly indicating that these are commonly accepted ends.
The Christian idea of government was understood completely by the framers of the Constitution. In the preamble to the Constitution they stated their full intent: "We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
Because our government derives its power, its form and its very existence from Christianity and the laws of God, the modern attempt to secularize society and divorce government from Christianity spells destruction.

The Federal Government's resposibility is for the nation as a whole. To expect a 24 hour Mobilization of the entire Government to assist inthe area is a complete and utter pipe dream. My wife and I are avid newswatchers. We saw the Govenor of Louisiana ordering an evacuation. Yet, I didn't see Mayor Nagin reiterating that order? If I missed it,My apologises, he may have came on while I was at work. I didn't seethe New Orleans School Buses or Metro transportation moving peoplebefore the storm hit.No, he ranted and railed that since his community was black, theydidn't recieve the notice from the President.Where are the Libertarians in this fight? You have a man who insiststhat the Federal Government must be responsible for every city, townand village in the USA and you say nothing? I had assumed you werethe party who wanted to keep the Federal out of the State and Local. In the final analysis, we must find it wasn't the Federal Government,nor the State Government, who was lax in their service to the peopleof New Orleans. Yet no money, Local money, was placed intoreinforcing them. The Army Corps of Engineers has said the Leveeswere in poor condition. Apparently the Cost/risk ratio didn't justifymaintaining them. The Mayor and City Council of New Orleans gambledwith the lives of New Orleans residents and lost. They convincedthemselves that a Major Hurricane wouldn't hit them and didn't see thepoint in spending the necessary Millions to maintain them. Like everycasino, in Mother Nature's Casino, the House ALWAYS wins and NewOrleans has lost everything.I work with a man from New Orleans orginally and he was furious at theFederal Government for not upgrading the Levies. Who's responsibilitywas it? Not at the federal level.People, nothing in life is free. There is a balance to everything,good or bad. If we want a government that is largely locallygoverned, then we have to assume the responsibilty and burdens forgoverning ourselves. An Army Corps of Engineers "hit list" of recommended budget cuts would eliminate new flood-control programs in some of the nation's most flood-prone spots - where recent disasters have left thousands homeless and cost the federal government millions in emergency aid.
Clinton administration officials argue that the flood-control efforts are local projects, not national, and should be paid for by local taxes.
Nationwide, the administration proposes cutting 98 new projects in 35 states and Puerto Rico, for an estimated savings of $29 million in 1996.
Corps officials freely conceded the cuts, which represent only a small portion of savings the corps ultimately must make, may be penny-wise and pound-foolish. But they said they were forced to eliminate some services the corps has historically provided to taxpayers to meet the administration's budget-cutting goals.

In passing a $20.2 billion spending bill this week for water and energy projects, the House Appropriations Committee approved some significant increases in financing for several New Orleans area flood control and navigational projects.
The spending bill is expected on the House floor within the next two weeks.
For the New Orleans District of the Army Corps of Engineers, the panel allocated $106 million for construction projects, about $16 million more than proposed by President Clinton.
The bill would provide $47 million for "southeast Louisiana flood control projects," $16 million for "Lake Pontchartrain and vicinity hurricane protection," $15.9 million for the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal Lock on the Industrial Canal in New Orleans and $2 million for "West Bank hurricane protection -- from New Orleans to Venice."
Most of the projects received significant increases over what the Clinton administration had proposed. The exception: general flood control projects for southeast Louisiana, which remained at the $47 million suggested by Clinton. Local officials had hoped for double that amount.

For the metropolitan New Orleans area, Clinton's budget was seen as a mixed bag by local lawmakers and government officials. For instance, while Clinton called for $1.5 billion to be spent at Avondale Industries to continue building LPD-17 landing craft, his budget calls for significantly less than what Congress appropriated last year for Lake Pontchartrain and vicinity hurricane protection and for West Bank flood control projects.

Quesetion: Knowing that we will all pay more, should the Insurance companies actuarial tables factor in the cost of liver transplants for alcoholics and lung cancer treatment for smokers when trying to decide what our health insurance premiums should be?
How about insurance costs for our houses because of those who dwell near an earthquake fault?
How about our tax dollars? Should we all pay more in taxes because of others reckless decisions? How about those who willingly live behind a giant wall that seperates their city from the Gulf of Mexico which looms yards above their homes?
To say that somehow, it should be the taxpayers responsibility to pay more taxes, and drain funds away from other necessarry programs just so others can dangle off a cliff in perfect safety is just stupid.
Private citizens have choices. They can live at the bttom of a big bowl, or not. They can donate money to the victims at the bottom of a half full bowl if they want.
But alas, the Blaim Bush First crowd lives on.

US places 12th in aiding world's poor, report says
The report says Denmark is #1 with 89 cents per person each day in government aid, compare to the United States spent 15 cents per person each day in government aid to poor nations.
What the report doesn't say is that the United States is not a socialist government, and that while Denmark citizens spent 1 cent per person each day in private giving, US citizens gave (freely and without compulsion) 15 TIMES THAT NUMBER!
The unmitigated gall someone has for trying to GUILT we Americans into giving up our freedom in exchange for a system of government that would do our charitable giving through a tax and spend ideology (that we all know is the least efficient way to get things done). Keoto accord? Same idea. Screw them. We shot our wad on Tsunami relief and will probably suffer in New Orleans for it.
And do you think Denmark will pull through with their vast war chest of government generosity for our citizens (who gave until it hurt when others suffered, i.e. Tsunami Relief)? Hell no. Unfortunately for us, we have no way of convincing the rest of the insane world that our private dollars are just as valid as our tax dollars.

PR Machine Behind Cindy Sheehan?
Earlier this month, MoveOn helped organize anti-war vigils in support of Cindy Sheehan.
Current Democratic National Party Chair Howard Dean's organization Democracy for America is also involved, as is the more radical anti-war group Code Pink organized by San Francisco's Medea Benjamin.
Money donated through these groups and others is helping to pay for Gold Star families whose children have been killed in Iraq to attend anti-Bush protests.
This week Simi Valley California Gold Star wife Melanie House flew to Idaho for a protest and then flew to Crawford.

What are we to make of Mrs. Sheehan’s demand for a second meeting with President Bush? She claims she wants an explanation of why her son died, but she acknowledges that her mind is already made up. I have had enough with this mother of all mourners. But I will let her hang herself with her very own words, words that read like something right out of a Moscow-approved Communist Party USA propaganda pamphlet. This is an excerpt of a speech she gave Monday, as transcribed on the Web site of an outfit called Veterans for Peace, describing how she conceived of her protest (quoting verbatim):
"I’m gonna tell them, "You get that evil maniac [the president] out here, cuz a Gold Star Mother, somebody who’s blood is on his hands, has some questions for him."
And I’m gonna say, "OK, listen here, George. #1, you quit, and I demand, every time you get out there and say you’re going to continue the killing in Iraq to honor the fallen heroes by continuing the mission; you say, except Casey Sheehan.’ "

It's okay for Home Depot to buy my digitized credit-card receipts, says the privacy "community," to see whether I would be a soft touch for a riding mower. But if government agents want to see who has purchased explosive-level quantities of fertilizer, they should go store to store, checking credit-card receipts. Data-mining opponents would deny terror investigators a technology in common use in the commercial sector, simply because they think government should be kept inefficient to limit its power...Remember: data mining would only speed government access to records to which it is already legally entitled.Critics blasted the failure to "connect the dots" before September 11, and that failure was certainly a major factor. But the ACLU and its allies are working to ensure that the government can never effectively connect the dots. The ACLU needs to be stopped before more Americans are killed.

McAuliffe: Hillary May Drop Out
Former Democratic Party chairman Terry McAuliffe is reportedly predicting that 2008 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will drop out of her 2006 Senate reelection race if a challenger like Jeanine Pirro forces her to spend campaign cash earmarked for her presidential race.
"I had a conversation with Terry McAuliffe during the Republican convention," former top Clinton campaign advisor Dick Morris told Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes" Wednesday night.

"And I said, 'Do you think Hillary runs for re-election to the Senate if she has a tough race?'"
According to Morris, McAuliffe replied: "No, why should she squander $30 million getting reelected to a job she doesn't want?"

Perhaps Johnson's nonreligious critics have trouble taking him at his word because they don't understand the extent to which he believes that open intellectual inquiry will ultimately lead people to Christianity. Johnson believes this fundamentally: "We don't have to fear freedom of thought, because good thinking done in the right way will eventually lead back to the church, to the truth -- the truth that sets people free, even if it goes through a couple of detours on the way."

Today, a good friend of ours lost her drivers liscence simply for passing out in labor at the hospital delivery room. And Michelle, in order to renew her CDL, was forced to change the name on her S.S. card to reflect her married name by providing a marriage liscence as proof. Ironically, the same CDL app provoded a space for illegal aliens, without ID, to obtain one.

There they go again, making up the news.
The New York Times took a breather yesterday from covering the Karl Rove pseudo-scandal to tout "The Evolution of Hillary Clinton" - a tribute to the ambitious Democrat's newfound voice of moderation.
Among the maneuvers cited by the Old Gray Lady was Mrs. Clinton's purported shift to the right on the hot-button issue of immigration.
Included in the evidence cited by the Times: Hillary's quote to WABC Radio's John Gambling on Feb. 11, 2003, wherein she proclaimed, "I am, you know, adamantly against illegal immigration."
The only problem is, Mrs. Clinton never spoke those words.
Apparently, the Times was offended by what she actually said, which was: "I am, you know, adamantly against illegal immigrants" - a quote first reported by NewsMax an hour after Clinton uttered it.

Story Continues Below Or a woman who NBC spent a year trying to convince to detail her allegation that she was raped by the president of the United States. If you're a member of the White House press corps, clearly the first story is a matter of supreme importance. The presidential rape allegation, on the other hand, is a real yawner. At yesterday's White House press briefing, reporters peppered Press Secretary Scott McClellan with 48 questions on the Wilson-Plame case - focusing on whether Bush would now fire Rove. The questioning turned so aggressively hostile that when McClellan asked a reporter to allow him to finish his answer, the reporter shot back: "No, you're not finishing. You're not saying anything." When President Clinton faced the press on March 19, 1999, however, it was a different story. Only ABC newsman Sam Donaldson dared ask the question that was on everybody's mind. "Mr. President, when Juanita Broaddrick leveled her charges against you of rape in a nationally televised interview, your attorney David Kendall issued a statement denying them. But shouldn't you speak directly on this matter and reassure the public? And if they are not true, can you tell us what your relationship with Ms. Broaddrick was, if any?" Clinton's response: "Well, five weeks ago today - five weeks ago today, I stood in the Rose Garden after the Senate voted [not to remove me from office] and I told you that I thought I owed it to the American people to give them 100 percent of my time and to focus on their business, and that I would leave to others to decide whether they would follow that lead. "And that is why I have decided as soon as that vote was over that I would allow all future questions to be answered by my attorneys, and I think I made the right decision. I hope you can understand it. I think the American people do understand it and support it. "And I think it was the right decision." Donaldson followed up, asking Clinton, "Why not simply deny it, sir?" The president instead invoked lawyer David Kendall's denial, explaining: "There's been a statement made by my attorney. He speaks for me, and I think he spoke quite clearly." And with that, the entire Washington press corps simply dropped the subject, never raising Broaddrick's claim with either Clinton or his then-Senate candidate wife again.
