The website of the Muslim Association of Canterbury (MAC) has links to documents stating a woman is prohibited from refusing her husband sex.

"It is not permitted for a woman who believes in Allah to forsake (her husband's) bed," it says.

The site also advised men to hit their wives when needed. Although hitting was not the way to discipline her, it could be resorted to "when all other means are exhausted".

"As to those women on whose part you fear ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next), refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly, if it is useful)".
